Many travellers to Cyprus wonder whether they can drive a rental car across the Green Line into the Turkish‑controlled north. The island has been divided since 1974; the UN‑controlled buffer zone (the “Green Line”) separates the Republic of Cyprus in the south from the self‑declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Visiting both sides is possible, but you need to understand the border procedures, insurance requirements and rental company policies before attempting the drive.

Is It Possible to Drive Across the Green Line?
Yes — it is physically possible to cross by car at several designated checkpoints. The busiest crossing is the Metehan / Agios Dometios checkpoint in Nicosia, which operates 24 hours a day. Another popular option is the Deryneia crossing near Famagusta, open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Pedestrians can also cross at the Ledra Street checkpoint in central Nicosia and other points.
However, rental companies set their own policies. At Infinite Car Rentals, our vehicles are insured and licensed only for use within the Republic of Cyprus. To take one of our cars north you must obtain permission in advance and purchase additional third‑party insurance at the border.
Insurance Requirements When Crossing the Green Line
Standard motor insurance issued in the south is not valid in Northern Cyprus. To drive north you must purchase “Turkish traffic insurance” at the checkpoint. This compulsory third‑party policy covers liability for damage you cause to other people or property — it does not cover damage to the rental car.
Because you are operating without comprehensive cover, you remain fully responsible for any damage or theft of the vehicle while in the north. Travellers typically pay around €25–€30 for one‑week cover. Bring your passport or EU national ID, rental agreement, vehicle registration documents and proof of the border insurance.
Which Checkpoints Allow Cars to Cross?
Vehicle crossings are limited to specific points along the Green Line. The main checkpoints are Metehan (Agios Dometios) in Nicosia, Deryneia near Famagusta, Astromeritis (Zodeia) west of Nicosia, Limnitis and Lefka in the north‑west. Opening hours vary; some operate 24 hours while others close late at night.
Ledra Street in central Nicosia is for pedestrians only. Always check current opening times before you travel.
What to Expect at the Border
At the southern checkpoint you will show your passport or EU ID and rental documents. After a short drive you reach the northern side where you purchase the mandatory insurance and receive paperwork for the car. Payment is usually in cash (euros) and the process takes only a few minutes.
Traffic drives on the left in both the Republic and Northern Cyprus. Road signs are in Greek in the south and Turkish in the north, but the symbols are familiar. Note that your rental company’s roadside assistance may not operate across the border, so drive with extra caution.
Risks and Alternatives
Driving across is permitted but carries risks. Because the border insurance is third‑party only, you bear the cost of any damage, breakdown or theft of the vehicle. If the car breaks down in the north you may have to tow it back to the south at your own expense.
For peace of mind, many travellers choose to leave their rental car on the southern side and cross on foot or by public transport. You can easily explore North Nicosia on foot or hire a separate car in the north.
