Car Rental Requirements in Cyprus
Before you book your car rental, it’s important to know the legal requirements and documentation you need to drive in the Republic of Cyprus. This guide covers minimum age limits, driver’s licences, payment methods and other key conditions.
Minimum Age and Licence Requirements
- The minimum age for renting a car in Cyprus is typically 21 years, though some suppliers require drivers to be 25.
- You must hold a valid driving licence for at least 12 months. EU and UK licences are accepted, as are most international licences.
- Drivers under 25 may be subject to a young driver surcharge.
Documents You Need to Provide
- A valid driving licence (plus International Driving Permit if your licence is written in a non-Latin alphabet).
- A valid passport or national identity card for identification.
- A credit card in the driver’s name for the security deposit.
- Your rental voucher or booking confirmation.
Deposits and Payment Methods
Most rental companies require a security deposit to be held on a credit card. Debit cards are sometimes accepted but may require additional verification or the purchase of full insurance. Cash deposits are rarely accepted.
Driving Restrictions and Additional Drivers
- Driving outside the Republic of Cyprus into the occupied North is generally not permitted or covered by insurance.
- If more than one person will drive, all additional drivers must be declared and present their licences. Additional driver fees may apply.
