Larnaca is a charming harbour city with palm–lined promenades and easy access to Cyprus’s best beaches and natural wonders. Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore beyond the seafront and soak up hidden villages, salt lakes and mosques at your own pace.
Why Rent a Car in Larnaca?
Public transport around Larnaca is limited and attractions are spread along the coast and inland. With a hire car you can easily hop between beaches, historical sites and nature reserves. A vehicle also makes it simple to reach the mountains and to take day trips to nearby cities like Ayia Napa and Nicosia.
Top Attractions Accessible by Car
Finikoudes Beach
Finikoudes Beach is Larnaca’s most popular strip of sand. It is lined with palm trees and cafes, making it ideal for a stroll, swim, or relaxed meal by the sea. Parking is usually easier if you arrive outside peak beach hours.
Larnaca Salt Lake and Hala Sultan Tekke
Just outside the centre you will find Larnaca Salt Lake, a peaceful nature reserve where flamingos may appear in winter. Nearby stands Hala Sultan Tekke, a historic mosque surrounded by gardens and open views.
St Lazarus Church and Medieval Castle
The Church of St Lazarus sits in the heart of town, close to cafes, pedestrian streets, and the old centre. A short drive away is the Medieval Castle of Larnaca, which is useful to combine with the seafront and Mackenzie Beach.
Mackenzie Beach and Promenade
Mackenzie Beach has clear water, restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere close to the airport. Continue along the promenade for seaside cafes, plane-spotting, and easy evening driving.
Is It Possible to Cross the Green Line?
Yes, it may be physically possible to drive a rental car into Northern Cyprus through approved checkpoints, but you must ask the rental company first. Standard insurance for vehicles licensed in the Republic of Cyprus does not automatically apply in the north. Drivers usually need company permission and temporary third-party border insurance at the checkpoint. Read our 2026 Green Line rental car guide before planning this route.
Driving Tips for Larnaca and Cyprus
Cyprus drives on the left. Give way correctly at roundabouts, wear seat belts, avoid mobile phone use while driving, and follow posted speed limits. Always carry your driving licence and rental agreement, and avoid unsurfaced roads unless your rental terms clearly allow them.
Larnaca Driving Checklist
